LKRA Marker/Flasher Program
At last year's online Town Hall, markers were identified as one of the most important safety needs for our lake. Here’s what Ted and his Marker team are doing about it.
Last year program volunteers replace many of the Marker Buoys located around the lake, especially the “Javex Bottle" style of buoys. They are subject to leaking and then sinking making them very hard to see. A total of 26 new orange buoys were installed and another 19 were identified as requiring replacement. Our goal is to have a consistent look for all markers throughout the lake.
Cottagers have said that buoys are sometimes hard to see, especially at night for water access cottagers.

Flashing lights are not always the answer as we try to balance safety with the concern of light pollution affecting cottagers’ quiet enjoyment at the lake. Solar lights have improved, and are much smaller and lighter. So larger buoys with solar lights were placed in the open areas of the lake in order to make rock shoals better identified after dusk and to assist those who access their cottages by water. Feedback was very positive with respect to this new initiative.
The Lake is always prone to high wind incidents resulting in many of the markers/buoys being blown off their sites. If anyone finds a marker, please contact me to arrange for the markers to be returned for future use.
Adopt a Marker Program:
Years ago an Adopt a Marker Program was initiated to ensure the placement of Markers/Flashers throughout the lake. A special thanks to those volunteers who helped us last year in adopting Markers/Flashers and ensuring their placement in the spring and their removal in the fall, along with their maintenance during the season. As more people choose to become full-time residents, the boating season becomes longer and a strong marker program more critical.
