Bringing wood into the Lake area increases risk of infestation

by Terry Rees

I have recently observed large piles of firewood brought to Lake Kasshabog by well-meaning cottagers that may not be aware of the serious threat to our hardwood trees, in the form of the imported Asian Long horned beetle.

Firewood should not be brought from outside our area to the cottage. The practice of moving cut wood across great distances increases the likelihood of an introduction that could have devastating effects on our oaks, and other hardwoods that in our region have already been seriously stressed from defoliation and drought over the last few years.

Particularly if you are in the restricted zone in the western GTA, you must NOT bring firewood, old pallets, or other wood materials to Kasshabog Lake. Please see the attached information from CFIA on this devastating pest.
